Air Cell Insulbreak is Kingspan’s closed-cell foam and reflective foil insulation. It is a thermal break rather than a bulk insulator: a thin, tough laminate that goes between the purlin and the sheet, or behind the cladding, and stops heat conducting straight through the metal.
It solves a different problem from a glass wool blanket, which is why a lot of Sydney roofs end up with both.
We supply Air Cell Insulbreak from Revesby alongside the sheeting and flashings for the same job.
A 3-in-1 insulation, vapour barrier and thermal break solution for steel-framed construction. In steel-framed buildings, Kingspan AIR-CELL Insulbreak delivers the R0.20 thermal break required for NCC BCA compliance*, reducing thermal bridging and conductivity between building elements. It is also commonly used in non-steel framed applications such as timber framed roofs.
Your solution for shed insulation, achieving comfortable indoor temperatures that are significantly cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
Manufactured with a patented closed-cell foam structure sandwiched by highly reflective foil surfaces, it is the fibre-free, non-allergenic alternative to conventional bulk insulation.
Kingspan AIR-CELL Insulshed 50 has been designed specifically for shed applications only. It is not suitable for use in residential, commercial buildings, or industrial building as classified under the BCA.
White-Faced Thermo Reflective Insulation
Kingspan AIR-CELL Insulwhite comprises a cross-linked, closed-cell insulation core sandwiched by a highly reflective foil facing on the upper side and a white facing on the other side.
Kingspan AIR-CELL Insulwhite is designed for use in attic conversions where a white ceiling-like appearance is desired.
This is the question we get asked most often at the counter, and the honest answer is that they do different jobs.
| Air Cell Insulbreak | Anticon blanket | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Closed-cell foam core with reflective foil facings | Glass wool blanket with a reflective foil facing |
| Primary job | Thermal break and reflective barrier | Bulk thermal insulation and acoustic control |
| Thickness | Thin (PLACEHOLDER_THICKNESS) | Thick, typically 55mm to 75mm and up |
| Rain noise | Some reduction | Substantially better |
| Where it goes | Between purlin and sheet, or behind cladding | Draped over safety mesh under the sheet |
| Handling | Tough, does not shed fibres | Fibrous, needs PPE |
| Constrained roof space | Works where a blanket will not fit | Needs the depth |
Use Insulbreak when the roof build-up is tight, when you need a thermal break at the purlin to stop conductive bridging, or when you want a durable, non-fibrous product a trade can handle without gloves and a mask.
Use Anticon when the priority is rain noise and bulk R-value and you have the depth for it.
Use both when the job needs the blanket for R-value and acoustics and the thermal break at the purlin as well. On a low-pitch metal roof over a habitable space in Sydney, that combination is common.
The airspace is doing half the work. Reflective insulation performs against an adjacent airspace. Compress it flat against both surfaces and you have thrown away most of the benefit. Maintain the cavity the specification calls for.
Tape the joints. Unsealed laps let air and moisture move through the layer and undermine both the thermal and condensation performance. Use a compatible reinforced foil tape, such as silver reinforced tape.
Support it properly. Over purlins, run it over safety mesh where the span and the site’s safety requirements call for it.
Think about condensation, not just heat. A vapour-permeable membrane and a reflective thermal break are not interchangeable. If the job needs a breathable layer, look at Proctorwrap or Solitex Mento Plus instead of, or in addition to, the foil products. Condensation management in Australian roofs is covered by the NCC condensation management provisions and AS 4200. Check the current requirements for your climate zone.
Keep the facing clean. A reflective surface that is dusty, painted or in contact with another surface is no longer a reflective surface.

What is Air Cell Insulbreak?
Air Cell Insulbreak is a Kingspan insulation product made of a closed-cell foam core with reflective foil facings. It acts as a thermal break and reflective barrier, installed between the purlin and the roof sheet or behind wall cladding.
What is the difference between Insulbreak and Anticon?
Insulbreak is a thin closed-cell foam and foil thermal break. Anticon is a thick glass wool blanket with a foil facing that provides bulk R-value and significant rain-noise reduction. Insulbreak suits tight roof build-ups and thermal bridging at purlins. Anticon suits jobs where acoustic performance and bulk insulation matter and the depth is available. Many roofs use both.
Does Insulbreak reduce rain noise on a metal roof?
It reduces it somewhat, but it is not the right product if noise is the main concern. A glass wool blanket such as Anticon is substantially better for rain noise.
Can Insulbreak be used behind wall cladding?
Yes. It is used behind metal wall cladding as a thermal break and reflective layer, subject to the same requirement to maintain the adjacent airspace.
